Legislative Forum to Engage Migrant Students in the Political Process
Media Coverage Invited this Saturday in Camarillo
Middle and high school students from migrant families in Ventura County will have a unique opportunity to learn about the legislative process from State Assemblymember Monique Limón this Saturday in Camarillo. The Ventura County Office of Education is hosting an interactive Student Legislative Forum that will give students an up-close look at how laws are made in California. The students are all part of the VCOE Migrant Education Program, which provides support to children of migrant laborers who attend Ventura County schools.
What: Migrant Education Program Student Legislative Forum
When: Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Where: VCOE Conference and Educational Services Center - 5100 Adolfo Road, Camarillo, CA 93012
During the forum, students will learn how a bill becomes a law, how to research the various sides of political issues and how to advocate for legislation. In the morning hours, the entire group of students will receive an orientation to help them formulate proposed legislation that addresses a concern in their school or community. Then they will meet in small groups to plan and write their proposals and to select speakers to represent their groups. After they have lunch with Assemblymember Limón, they will formally present their proposals to her.
Media coverage of this unique educational event is invited. There will be interview opportunities with students, educators and Assemblymember Limón.
